DEATH MASK: Inaugural Group Show

Join us on the night before Halloween, as a wide range of talented artists reimagine the concept of the DEATH MASK.

In Underland Gallery's inaugural group exhibition, 18 different artists will be exhibiting their own interpretations of the "Death Mask". Known to some in Western cultures as an artistic tool for post-mortem portraiture and bust creation. Take a brief glimpse at any culture around the world throughout time, however, and you can find different iterations of masks that represent death: as a character, a symbol, a transformation, a journey to be undertaken, or a destination. The night before Halloween, submerge yourself in a gallery show rich with mythos, imagination and darkness.

To celebrate the shadows, to celebrate what lies in the Underland.

Exhibiting artists: ann/drew gayle, Casey Lin, Edel Ferri, Frid Branham, Janet Morgan, Jordan Auffrey, Jordin Isip, Julissa Llosa Vite, Katie Coughlin, Kelley Donahue, Lindsay McAleavy, Meryl Bennett, Moo Stein, Paige Womack, Rachel Chicaguala, Ricardo Diseño, Sarah Hughes, and Tiana Tucker.

Costumes highly encouraged. Masks and proof of vaccination required. Limited capacity.

KINDLING: Book Launch and Gallery Exhibition for Linnea Ryshke

KINDLING: Book Launch and Gallery Exhibition for Linnea Ryshke

In the summer of 2019, artist and poet Linnea Ryshke worked as a laborer at an organic meat farm. She transformed what she saw, as well as the specific and acute interactions she had with the animals, into a series of poems, photographs, and artwork. Ryshke’s intimate, honest, and poignant account reflects what it means to confront the lives and deaths of individual creatures who are valued commodities. Through image and text, Kindling profoundly evokes experiences with animals that will leave a lasting impression on the reader.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

“It is difficult to find the balance between art and activism. Linnea Ryshke’s, Kindling, weaves poetry, photography, and painting into a heartbreakingly beautiful book about finding and holding space for the more-than-human. She creates a lasting dialogue between embodiment and materiality, the didactic and the ambiguous, and art and activism that avoids the trap of overt sentimentality. Kindling provides us that elusive and magical space in between, where empathy and change can flourish and grow.”—Kathryn Eddy, artist activist and co-editor of The Art of the Animal: Fourteen Women Artists Explore the Sexual Politics of Meat

**PLEASE NOTE:** To enter, you will need to show proof of full vaccination along with your ticket. Masking indoors will be required. This is a limited capacity event. Refreshments will be provided. Talk will start at 8PM.
